STUDIES ON CHORIO ALLANTOIC CULTURE OF SMALLPOX VACCINE

Abstract
Chick-membrane culture smallpox vaccine has proved to be as successful as calf Iymph vaccine both in the percentage of "takes" and in the duration of immunity following vaccination. It has the additional advantage of being sterile, bacteria free, and is not subject to contaminate with such pathogens as CIostridium tetani, as is the calf lymph vaccine.
Each egg membrane (chorio-aliantoic membrane) can be tested for contamiantion. Only sterile mem branes are used in the vaccine. This method of preparation of smallpox vaccine can be confined to a single room with ordinary laboratory facilities. The process has proved to be very ECONOMICAL as approximate¢¥_S 200 to 300 individual vaccinations can result from each egg inoculated.
